CHAPTER 16

Cassie followed Oliver and Eve toward Oliver’s car. She glanced back over her shoulder at Sebastian.

“I’ll text you!”

“Just be careful.” Sebastian watched from the doorway.

Cassie knew he would understand her need to help Eve. He was such a protective person, always willing to lend a helping hand. She closed the door and grabbed Eve’s hand and squeezed it.

“Don’t worry, Eve, we’re going to get this all worked out.”

Eve nodded. Her chin trembled as she looked away.

Cassie’s heart slammed against her chest. She peered through the darkness in the car at Oliver in the front seat. He kept his eyes forward as he drove toward the police station.

Cassie sent a quick text to Tessa to let her know what was happening and to see if Mark could help.

Panic threatened to overtake her as the police station came into view. She closed her eyes and took a long, slow, deep breath. To help Eve, she would have to be calm. As calm as she could be.

Oliver parked in front of the station, then turned the car off. He remained in his seat for a moment as he stared through the windshield.

Cassie tried to read his silence. She’d seen him angry before. She’d seen him hurt. But this felt different.

Oliver looked over his shoulder at the two of them in the back seat and winced. A second later, he opened the car door and stepped out.

It struck Cassie all at once, how conflicted he appeared to be. The anger she felt toward him lessened as she realized the difficulty he faced. He had to follow the evidence, even if that led him to a place he didn’t want it to.

“It’s okay, Eve.” Cassie squeezed her hand. “It’ll just be a quick conversation. We’ll get through this.”

“Right, yes.” Eve nodded.

Oliver opened the back door for Eve and stepped aside as she climbed out.

“We can go in through the side door.” He tipped his head toward the corner of the police station. “People around here like to gossip.”

Cassie stepped out of the car and matched her pace to Eve’s as they approached the door.

Her stomach churned, despite her attempt to remain calm.

Oliver met her eyes as he opened the door.

Instead of looking away, she held his gaze. His efforts to make the process as painless as possible weren’t lost on her.

Oliver led them down a short hallway and opened a door at the end of it.

“Right in here.”

“I want to see the note.” Eve pulled out a chair from the single table in the room and sat down in it.

“I’ll get to that.” Oliver sat down across from her. “First, I want to talk to you about your history with Lilliana.”

“We’ve been over that already. It was years ago. There’s no reason for me to want to cause her harm now. I have a good life, a career I enjoy, and family and friends that I can count on.” Eve shrugged. “I never held any grudges against Lilliana.”

“If that’s the case, then why didn’t you approach her when you found out she was here?” Oliver looked across the table at her.
